SERGIO LOPEZ-RIVERA ~Makeup Artist

SERGIO IS ONE OF MY DEAREST FRIENDS and my favorite beer drinking buddy-it’s a Spanish thing. HE IS AN INCREDIBLY TALENTED AND CREATIVE MAKEUP ARTIST~Sergio’s resume is impressive (he won an Oscar and is so humble on the subject matter)
You’ve seen his work on TV, Film, fashion pages, plus a roster of beauties like Viola Davis, Kate Walsh, Amy Brenneman, Mireille Enos and Alicia Silverstone- just to name a few

A little BIO ~Sergio was born and raised in Spain. From a very young age, he started to showcase his talent as an artist, sketching portraits in pencil and charcoal. By the age of twelve, he was already “painting” his first faces.. Sergio moved to the U.S in 1987, and by 1995 he was graduating top of his class from the Joe Blasco School of Makeup. His work spans TV and Film including The First Lady, The Woman King, The Hunger Games, G20, Felicity, Scandal, Private Practice and How to get Away with Murder. He also worked on August Wilson’s MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM for which he was awarded the Hollywood Critics Association Award, the Critics Choice Award, the Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Award, the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for “Best Makeup”.

SERGIO’S FAVORITE PRODUCTS, INSPIRATION AND FOREVER FRIENDSHIPS ~

GO-TO FOR SKIN PREP?
I am always looking for smaller natural brands and lately my new skin prep is MAD HIPPIE. I use their Vitamin C Toning Mist followed by the Vitamin C Serum and finish with the Antioxidant Facial Oil.

FAVORITE BLUSH?
PAT MCGRATH Divine Cream Blush Sticks. I love how sheer yet buildable they are and the stick makes for easy application

KIT ESSENTIAL ?
NATASHA DENONA Energizing & Hydrating Primer Serum ~It instantly elevates the skin prep by brightening and locking in moisture.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
I think my biggest and most constant inspiration has always been the movies. I love movies, but especially the classics from the 30’s & 40’s

FONDEST MEMORIES?
Creatively, my favorite experience was working on MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM because the design required taking some risks. I was able to design exactly what I wanted without interference from production or other creatives. It was rare to have an experience like that and I loved every second of the creative process.
Personally my favorite work experience was PRIVATE PRACTICE because of the freedom I had to run the Makeup Department as I saw fit. I also made lifelong friendships on this show and I am so grateful for that.
FAVORITE DESTINATION IN SPAIN?
My favorite destination is my hometown ~Santander. It’s located in the North of Spain with stunning beaches, lots of nature, culture, unbelievable cuisine and it rains a lot, which deters the gross tourism you see in other less rainy destinations!!

Xanax (for turbulance!! It’s just not for me)
Eye Drops and a then bunch of other stuff I never use, but insist on carrying across the world with me, ”just in case”

FAVORITE FOUNDATION?
It depends on the clients skin but for long wear, I like LANCOME and for lighter coverage, I like TOM FORD or HAUS LABS

SKIN PREP?
I always start with moisturizer and Eye patches- the TALIKA Eye Therapy patches are a current favorite and if there is time, some type of lymphatic drainage and/or a quick ZIIP session.

FONDEST MEMORIES on set?
SONG SUNG BLUE with Kate Hudson It’s an amazing script and the crew was so fun. I love working with Kate because not only is she exceptionally good at her job, but she loves it and because of her love for it, she bounds into the trailer everyday with a smile on her face and it’s just dreamy and inspiring.
MUSIC & LYRICS - This film shifted my career and not only introduced me to Drew Barrymore, who I would do just about anything for, but it showed me how much fun you can have on set. I can’t settle for anything less now.
SHINING VALE~ I loved this show because everyday was a blast and everyday, I was so happy to go into work and have Courteney Cox in my makeup chair. She is magic and I adore her.
HARPER’S BAZAAR~because well..It’s Harper’s Bazaar !!!
